Episode 160: Summer Movie Preview

This week the Advocates discuss the upcoming films of Summer 2013.

Give us a listen, because we explain the difference between Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down.

Man of Steel hits theaters June 14, which is a month from now (not that I’m patiently counting down the days and hours or anything).  From this point on, until it’s release, we will be featuring Man of Steel merchandise, courtesy of wbshop.com. This week we start with a Superman POP Hero inspired by the film.  He’s cute, but can do some damage.  Get him while you can.

Star Trek Into Darkness

STID_OneSheet_Fri_lxr12cOSVflEOne of the biggest movie events of the year is finally here. Star Trek Into Darkness is the sequel to the well received Star Trek 2009. The first film pleased both longtime fans of the series and newcomers alike. It doesn’t mean much to say that there were a lot of people looking forward to this next installment (present company included). Star Trek Into Darkness is once again directed by J.J. Abrams, written by his Lost compatriots Damon Lindelof, Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and stars the same ensemble cast as the first with several new additions, the most noted being Benedict Cumberbatch as the villain. After the insane amount of hype this movie has generated, one would think that this movie would fall flat in certain areas because of the high expectations that were set. I’m here to tell you that this movie delivers. Read more

Cloud Atlas

I want to see this movie.  I do.  It looks amazing.  The visuals and the attention to detail.  Really, the concept alone is enough to get me on board.  And it’s my Sight Unseen Recommendation for the week.  But it’s just sooooooooo long.  It’s 172 minutes.  That’s nearly 3 hours.  I will watch it though.  Especially now that I can do so in the comfort of my home, with my hot air popped popcorn and Diet Orange Shasta.

Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo

I haven’t been into anime like I used to be. I gladly passed on my knowledge and interest in the genre to my 15 yr old niece and 11 yr old nephew. I do enjoy watching an anime series now and again and their movie adaptations. This is where Evangelion 3.0 comes in. All of you anime people know of the series Neon Genesis Evangelion. It’s widely considered to be one of the best anime series ever made for a variety of reasons. About six years ago they started to release movie versions of the T.V. show and were calling it the Rebuild of Evangelion. It would be a tetralogy (series of four) of films retelling the story of the original anime with minor changes here and there. So they released Evangelion 1.0, 2.0, and now 3.0 and the rebuild was met with a wide amount of success. Actually the first two films won the equivalent of the Academy Award for best animated feature in Japan. Each of these films is highly anticipated worldwide whenever they are released and are always sold out in theatres in Japan with any screenings. I recently got the opportunity to watch this after its blu-ray release last week (Japanese only). I own the first two and have been freaking out over this release since the movie premiered in November of last year.

Kon-Tiki

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve loved adventure films. I mean, what kid growing up in the 80s didn’t pretend to be a Goonie? Sometimes, I’m still convinced I really am one; searching for One-Eyed Willie, dodging the Fratellis, eating Baby Ruths and Rocky Road ice cream with Sloth. Films like The Goonies and Indiana Jones brought out the explorer in me. They opened up my curiosity for the lost and unknown. It’s been a really long time since a film has exposed that side of me. Adventure films, in my opinion, are not what they used to be. Just watch the last Indiana Jones flick or the second Journey to the Center of the Earth movie and you’ll see what I mean. Something got lost somewhere between Astoria, Oregon and The Shire. But fear not, my fellow adventurers, I think I may have found it again with the Norwegian film Kon-Tiki.

Iron Man 3

You won’t read a single review for Iron Man 3 that doesn’t reference the line in The Avengers that Steve Rogers says to Tony Stark: “Big man in a suit of armor – take that off, what are you?” That line, I suspect, served as the entire mission statement for the conception, writing and making of Iron Man 3. Yes, he’s the genius billionaire playboy philanthropist, and to be fair he’s been all of these things for far longer than he’s been Iron Man. But when something that big happens to you, becomes such a quickly ingrained and all-encompassing part of your identity…well, take that one thing away, what are you?

Disconnect

Every now and then a film comes along that really makes you take a step back and think about what our lives are like. In this age of technology and social media, things are so different from the way they were 10, 15, 20 years ago. The way we communicate with each other evolves every single day. The more comfortable we become with it, the more it affects our relationships, our minds, and our sense of self. Read more
